Kandy, known as the hill capital, is the site of the annual Perahera. It was the last bastion of the Sinhala Kings, which was ultimately surrendered to the British in 1815. Kandy exemplifies the influence of Buddhism in contemporary Sri Lanka, with numerous temples and monasteries preserving Buddhist traditions.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic has been revered since the 4th Century A.D., when the Buddha's Tooth was smuggled into Sri Lanka concealed in the hair of an Orissan princess to protect it from desecration. The Relic has since gained immense significance and sanctity in Sri Lanka and across the Buddhist world, regarded as the nation's most treasured possession.
